Approach to the Refuge Branca

  2. Monte Gavia
  3. Pizzo Tresero - Punta Petranzini - San Matteo ridge traverse, Monte Gavia

We spent the following night at the Refuge Branca and hiked back to the car the next morning. Since we were pretty tired, we wanted to climb a peak with a short approach and Rainer chose Monte Gavia (3223 m) close to Gavia Pass. The from the road toward the peak is very well constructed, it probably led to some military site. However, in some sections it is obviously overengineered which can only be explained by the boredom that some soldiers must have experienced while being assigned to that remote post...

The last part of the climb consists of a UIAA II scramble and Claus-Dieter and Rainer went for it. Since I was still a bit tired from the climb the day before I didn't want to spoil the trip by slipping and chose to wait for them at the base. Just when they were on the summit clouds moved in and the weather deteriorated. When we returned to the car it started raining and it pretty much kept raining all the way back to Munich.
